📣 The Humber Literary Review (HLR) and the Creative Nonfiction Collective (CNFC) have joined forces once again to bring you a Canada-wide creative nonfiction contest.

The 2022 Contest is now open!

👩🏻‍💻 WHO: The competition is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.

📓WHAT: Original previously unpublished creative nonfiction – maximum word length 3,000 words (no minimum). Literary journalism, memoir, and the personal or lyric essay—all are welcome.

🗓 WHEN: Contest Closes Monday February 21, 2022 at 11:59pm PST.

🏆 Winners will be announced in June 2022 during the 2022 CNFC annual conference. First prize will include a payment of $750 and publication in The Humber Literary Review.

💰FEE: General public $20; CNFC members $15.

Recently CNCF’s Lesley Buxton had the pleasure of interviewing new board member Fiona Campbell, who has been the “I” behind these squares since June and is a member of the 2023 conference planning committee.
.
Fiona Campbell (she/her) is a CNF writer, journalist, editor and communications professional. She’s also a passionate storyteller who never outgrew her love of the question, “Why?” For 20 years she’s written for national magazines, websites and non-profits on topics related to the arts, sustainable agriculture, the environment, travel, running and social justice.

She has an MFA in creative nonfiction (University of King’s College), a BAA in journalism with a specialty in magazine writing and publishing (Ryerson University), and a BA in international development (University of Guelph). Fiona is working on a collection of lyrical essays from her home in Madoc, Ont., (treaty territory of the Anishinabewaki people) where she currently lives with her two teenage kids (ages 19 & 17), one dog, and too many books. She hopes to move to the East coast very soon. When she’s not working, she likes to run, a lot, and really far.

The CNFC is deeply sorry to learn of Lee Maracle’s passing this morning. Her voice was a powerful and necessary one in the fight against Indigenous oppression. She was a brilliant mind and writer, and tireless in elevating and amplifying Indigenous voices and experiences. She will be missed.

Apparently Editor Appreciation Day isn’t until November 24, but we’re going to celebrate it a bit early.

I was a writer for almost 10 years before I started working as an editor. Now I do both. Not only does editing give me the opportunity to flex another part of my brain, but it’s helped me become a better writer. I’ve found I love language a little more deeply, I’m less afraid to cut the extra bits (even the well written ones!) if they don’t add to the story, and I’ve become braver with my storytelling.

NEW BLOG POST: CNCF board member Lesley Buxton interviewed Rachel about writing in different forms, teaching, and her recent book crush.

Rachel Rose’s fiction debut, The Octopus Has Three Hearts, was published by Douglas & McIntyre in 2021, and was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. She is the author of four collections of poetry, including Marry & Burn, which received a 2016 Pushcart Prize, and was a finalist for a Governor General’s Award. From 2014 to 2017, she was Poet Laureate of Vancouver. Her memoir, The Dog Lover Unit: Lessons in Courage from the World’s K9 Cops, was shortlisted for the 2018 Arthur Ellis award for best non-fiction crime book. A former fellow at The University of Iowa’s International Writing Program, and a former fellow at The University of Iowa’s International Writing Program, she has taught creative writing at Simon Fraser University’s The Writer’s Studio (TWS), Simon Fraser University’s Continuing Education Program, Washington State’s Poets in the Schools, the University of British Columbia, Kwantlen University, and, at present, Vancouver Manuscript Intensive (VMI).

CNFC member Sandra Phinney and CNFC board member Darryl Whetter co-authored a new blog post, “A mentor, a mentee and a beautiful residency” about Sandra’s writing residency at Joggins Fossil Cliffs, in Joggins, NS., and her evolution from student to mentee, and from journalist to CNF writer.

Writes Sandra: "Already I see improvements in my writing. I spent so many years trying to be true to the journalistic style I had embraced (keeping myself out of other people’s stories) that it’s taking me time to find my voice and to provide the emotional depth/honesty required in CNF. But it’s happening, and I am finding great joy in this new venture."

Adds Darryl, "Reconnecting with Sandra in writing classes and now again across kitchen tables shingled with manuscripts was a great return for me after my recent years directing the first master’s writing program in Singapore and one of the first in Southeast Asia. I’m delighted to help mentor Sandra’s transition from professional journalism to more personal CNF, in part because I too have been blessed with some positive serendipity around CNF mentors."

Novelist, poet, journalist and memoirist Professor Darryl Whetter will present a workshop which introduces numerous examples and opportunities for you to splice other texts (for example, family letters, legislation, medical documentation) into your own while discovering new modes of creativity and new opportunities for making nonfiction creative.

Professor Darryl Whetter is the author of four books of fiction and two poetry collections. His most recent books are the climate-crisis novel Our Sands, from Penguin Random House, and Teaching Creative Writing in Asia, with Routledge. A Canadian, he was the inaugural director of the first Creative Writing master’s degree in Singapore. His essays have been published by Oxford University Press, Routledge, Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle, The Brooklyn Rail, The Walrus, etc.

It seems that no matter how old (or young) we are,

It seems that no matter how old (or young) we are, or if we have (or don’t have) children, that back-to-school feeling seems to be as synonymous with September as changing leaves, cooler nights and pumpkin spice lattes. (Yes, I said it.)

In solidarity with all the kids writing “What I did this summer” stories for their first day of school 🍎 we’re sharing some writing prompts to get your memories reeling and your pens moving.

Writing prompts are simply a way to begin. Stick closely to the original prompt or wander off on a tangent.

But as Natalie Goldberg writes her in book Writing Down the Bones, “Don’t be abstract. Write the real. Be honest and detailed.”

The writers in Joy Castro’s collection “Family Troubles: Memoirists on the Hazards and Rewards of Revealing Family” (including CNFC’s @susan.olding ) speak from a diverse range of perspectives as they explore ethical dilemmas, explain their practical strategies for each step of the writing and publishing process, and examine the barriers - internal and external - against writing about family.

Writes Joy Castro: “Write, I tell my students. You cannot predict what will offend someone, so just write. You can always revise, emend, edit.”

For those of you who write about family, how have you learned to navigate these murky waters? Where do you draw the line between your story and someone else’s? How have your reconciled the risks of exposing a family secret? How do you distinguish “memory” from “truth” and “fact”?
